Overview
For this project, the team was contracted by Nike to design fitness clothing and equipment displays for Dick’s Sporting Goods locations in the Portland area. My responsibilities involved designing a new two-dimensional elevation display, building upon the team’s previous display design.
Materials and themes from the older design were incorporated into something new, aimed at empowering patrons to achieve their fitness goals in the new year. The display would showcase a selection of Nike clothing and workout equipment curated specifically for ease of use and an all in one package.
Early concepts
This early concept served as my starting point. To ensure consistency between campaigns, I carried forward the pegboard and tape elements from the team's previous design. The display featured a three-piece structure, consisting of one large back wall with video display panels and two smaller cabinets containing clothing options.
Recognizing the need for increased interactivity on the back wall, we explored the addition of a row of mannequins to display various clothing options.
Display iterations
Following our presentation to Nike, it became evident that we needed to enhance the gym aesthetics of our display. We decided to incorporate actual gym equipment to provide a more compelling showcase for shoe options alongside clothing, as well as to create seating areas for patrons trying on shoes.
Additionally, we added a row of podiums to better utilize the space between the display walls. To achieve this, I explored podium designs that complemented the pegboard and tape aesthetic, as well as variations incorporating barbells to further emphasize the gym equipment theme.
Display video screens
I designed the display screens to attract and inform individuals about initiating a workout routine. These screens showcase appropriate workout attire for various exercise types and provide a monthly calendar of available classes.
By helping patrons identify the necessary gym equipment for their chosen workouts, they can easily select and join a class, supporting their fitness goals.
Final elevations
Following a second review with Nike, we confirmed that we were on the right track. Our next objective was to simplify the design and enhance its polish. I suggested removing one of the less functional bars on the main wall to create additional space for gym equipment, which would be a more effective use of the area compared to displaying shoes.
Additionally, we reintroduced the two-tone pegboard to add contrast and energy to the display. To ensure a cohesive and practical design, it was decided that the podiums should align with the pegboard aesthetics.
Final product rendering
Upon receiving Nike's approval, the designs were forwarded to an external vendor for three-dimensional rendering. This is a mockup of the display that would be built and installed in Dick’s Sporting Goods stores across the Portland, OR area.
